DB E.C.O. North America hosted a delegation of U.S. and Canadian transportation leaders in Germany from September 7–12, 2025 for an in‑depth program on station design, operations, and innovation. The multi‑city program offered participants firsthand insight into how German stations are planned, managed, and operated, and how these facilities contribute to urban development, seamless mobility, and high‑quality passenger experiences.

Delegates visited stations in Berlin, Leipzig, Stuttgart, and Munich, accompanied by Deutsche Bahn experts who provided detailed presentations on operational excellence, sustainable station management, and the role of technology in shaping modern rail hubs. The trip also included behind‑the‑scenes access to control rooms, demonstrations of digital passenger information systems, and insights into overhead catenary maintenance.

Key highlights from the event included:

Exploring a Range of Station Designs: Participants toured stations of various sizes and functions – from major hubs like Berlin and Stuttgart Central Stations to medium‑sized and smaller stations. Each visit provided perspectives on design principles, passenger flow, and the operational requirements for different station types.

Experience in Digital Innovation: Delegates engaged with digital tools supporting modern station operations, including advanced crowd‑management systems, real‑time passenger information platforms, and data‑driven approaches that enhance safety and efficiency in high‑traffic environments.

Multimodal Connectivity and Urban Integration: Experts highlighted how German stations connect multiple modes of transportation – trains, buses, trams, bikes, and shared mobility – creating efficient and sustainable travel chains. Attendees gained insights into how stations serve as mobility hubs and anchor broader urban development.

Focus on Safety and Community: Participants examined Deutsche Bahn’s approach to security infrastructure, safety protocols, and station‑area community initiatives. Discussions explored how stations function not only as transportation assets but also as welcoming public spaces that support local communities.

Behind the Scenes of Station Operations: Delegates visited operational control rooms and learned how Deutsche Bahn manages station maintenance, asset conditions, and incident response. These sessions provided a close look at the systems, tools, and teams that keep stations running smoothly.

Latest Innovations in Passenger‑Facing Services: The program showcased advancements such as modernized signage and wayfinding, dynamic passenger‑information displays, and the integration of retail, dining, and advertising concepts that elevate the passenger experience and contribute to station vitality.

The Station Design & Operations Delegation Trip fostered valuable transatlantic exchange and offered participants a comprehensive view of how German stations support operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and sustainable mobility. DB E.C.O. North America thanks all attendees and Deutsche Bahn colleagues for contributing their time, expertise, and insights throughout the week.
