DB E.C.O. North America hosted the “Rail Innovation Exchange” at One World Trade Center in New York City on September 30, 2025. The event convened industry leaders, innovators, and technical experts for a focused discussion on how emerging technologies, sustainability strategies, and operational advancements are influencing the evolution of rail systems across North America and Europe.  The Exchange provided a forum for transatlantic dialogue, knowledge sharing, and the presentation of best practices aimed at accelerating modernization and decarbonization efforts in the rail sector.

DB E.C.O. North America welcomed guests from across the United States and Germany and expressed its appreciation to Justin R. Vonashek, President of MTA Metro-North Railroad, for his welcome remarks. Special remarks were also delivered by Carsten Rüpke, Deputy Consul General at the German Consulate General New York, who emphasized the significance of initiatives like the “Rail Innovation Exchange” in strengthening German–American cooperation in mobility.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage in discussions, delve into the latest innovations in rail transportation, and gain insights into sustainable and efficient solutions that help drive the industry forward.

Are We Still on Track to Zero? Pathways to Zero‑Emission Rail: In this session, Volker Heepen, Managing Director, SFWB – State Institute for Rail Vehicles Baden-Württemberg and Andreas Hoffrichter, Head of the Center for Net Zero Transformation in Rail & Transit, DB E.C.O. North America examined the status of zero‑emission initiatives across national networks, discussed ongoing strategies in Europe and North America, and explored the technologies, policies, and partnerships guiding the transition toward cleaner operations.

Innovative Approaches to Maintaining and Expanding Rail Infrastructure: Tobias Fischer, Senior Vice President Engineering, Technology, Infrastructure & Maintenance Management, DB InfraGO from Deutsche Bahn’s Infrastructure Division and Stefan Leistner, Principal, DB E.C.O. North America; former Head of Analytics & Asset Management, Deutsche Bahn outlined Germany’s comprehensive rail modernization strategy, including the overhaul program, advanced maintenance practices, and methods for building resilient, high‑performance rail networks.

Designing the Future of Onboard Hospitality: Alexander Thies, Head of Onboard Services, DB Long‑Distance showcased together with Philip Schaaf, Head of Products and Logistics, DB Long‑Distance how strategic planning, customer insights, and operational innovation are shaping the future of onboard hospitality.

The “Rail Innovation Exchange” brought together industry leaders, innovators, and experts for a day of discussion and networking. DB E.C.O.
