The summit featured keynote remarks from Deputy U.S. Transportation Secretary Steven Bradbury and Federal Railroad Administrator David Fink, who emphasized the importance of innovation in advancing rail safety, reliability, and system performance. Throughout the day, attendees participated in panel discussions and interactive exchanges and engaged directly with more than a dozen rail technologies showcased at the event.

The summit showcased a range of emerging tools, including an AI‑enabled mobile inspection system designed to detect railcar wear at an early stage, as well as advancements in the FRA’s automated track inspection efforts. FRA officials noted increasing collaboration with major railroads to broaden the deployment of automated inspection methods, enabling earlier defect detection and supporting accident prevention.

Passenger rail developments were a central focus of the program. Paul Lewis, Principal at DB E.C.O. North America, joined peers from the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA), the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), and Amtrak for a panel discussion moderated by FRA Chief Development Officer Paul Nissenbaum. The panel explored where passenger rail is gaining momentum across the United States and how innovative practices are contributing to growth.

Panelists discussed expanding market segments, the increasing role of customer experience in shaping service priorities, and the importance of strong partnerships in translating long‑term plans into operational passenger rail services. The conversation underscored that collaboration across agencies, operators, and the private sector is essential to delivering effective and sustainable programs in the U.S. passenger rail context.

Several themes emerged consistently throughout the summit, including continued growth in intercity passenger rail across the United States, the need for a sustained culture of innovation to address long‑standing challenges, and growing alignment among stakeholders on what it takes to advance passenger rail services.

The FRA Rail Technology Summit served as a timely reminder that while the challenges facing the rail industry remain complex, there is increasing momentum around innovation and collaboration as key drivers of progress for passenger rail in the United States.
