Rethinking Commuter Rail for the Modern Era – A Roundtable: In this roundtable discussion, Benjamin Limmer, Chief of Public Transportation at the Connecticut Department of Transportation, Darrell Smith, Director for Statewide Planning at Maryland MTA, and Thorsten Krenz, CEO of ONxpress Toronto, shared how commuter rail agencies responded to rapid shifts in travel patterns, revenue volatility, and operational demands. They described the strategies their organizations used to adapt and highlighted opportunities to enhance service quality and performance.
The session was moderated by Paul Lewis, Principal at DB E.C.O. North America (Deutsche Bahn), who contributed insights from the Transportation Research Board’s Future of Commuter Rail in North America study, which he leads, and reflected on key findings emerging from the research.
Because It’s Worth It: Investing in Passenger Experience: In this teaser presentation, Dr. Svenja Leister, Senior Manager at DB E.C.O. North America (Deutsche Bahn), underscored why retaining satisfied riders and attracting new user groups is essential to the long‑term success of passenger rail operations.
She shared examples of Deutsche Bahn’s passenger‑centric initiatives that improve the customer experience throughout the journey and demonstrated how thoughtful design and service quality contribute to strong ridership outcomes.

The Digital Revolution in Railroad Signaling and Maintenance: Dr. Volker Hentschel, Head of the Corporate Program Digital Rail Germany at Deutsche Bahn, and Stefan Leistner, Program Manager High‑Performance Maintenance at Deutsche Bahn, presented an overview of Germany’s comprehensive rail modernization strategy.
They outlined the ambitious infrastructure overhaul program aimed at renewing more than 1,500 miles of track by 2030 to build a resilient, high‑performance rail network. The speakers explained how innovative, data‑driven maintenance approaches — leveraging IoT technologies and big‑data analytics — are being deployed to increase system availability and reduce unplanned outages. The session concluded with insights into the Digital Rail Germany initiative, illustrating how infrastructure renewal aligns with the rollout of next‑generation train‑control technologies to enhance network capacity and operational efficiency.
